Legacy

LEGACY brings together photographers and writers from around the world to explore this enduring human experience through the dialogue between image and text. Photography captures moments that might otherwise disappear, while words reveal the histories, emotions, and meanings that exist beyond the frame. Together, they create space for reflection, conversation, and remembrance. The exhibition asks a profound yet universal question:

What do we inherit, what do we preserve, and what do we pass on?

The answers are deeply personal. They may be found in family rituals, migration, ancestral knowledge, cultural identity, resistance, faith, love, loss, environmental stewardship, or the traces we leave in the lives of others. Legacy is not measured by wealth or fame, but by the values, memories, and acts of care that continue long after we are gone.

Lineage

Lineage is about inheritance. Not only what we inherit from our ancestors — but what we choose to preserve, reinterpret, and pass forward. It is an exhibition about memory becoming form. About Africa not as nostalgia, but as influence. About artists building cultural permanence. This exhibition is the beginning of a larger movement: A new language of African legacy, cultural depth, and contemporary artistic power.

The Return Of Greatness

July 2nd - 23rd, 2027

The Return of Greatness explores identity, cultural continuity, revival, and the enduring power of historical memory. Bringing together artists whose work engages with ancestry, tradition, resilience, and transformation, the exhibition examines how individuals and communities reclaim narratives that have been fragmented, overlooked, or forgotten. Rather than looking backward with nostalgia, The Return of Greatness celebrates culture as a living force—one that is continually renewed through art, memory, and imagination. It is an invitation to reflect on what we inherit, what we preserve, and how we shape the future by reconnecting with the strengths of our past. The exhibition affirms that greatness is not something to rediscover—it is something to remember, reclaim, and carry forward.

Kingdoms

September 2nd - 27th, 2027

Kingdoms explores ancestry, inheritance, dominion, and hierarchy through the lens of art. Moving beyond the idea of kingdoms as places or political systems, the exhibition examines the cultural, spiritual, and familial structures that shape identity and endure across generations. Bringing together artists whose practices engage with memory, power, tradition, and transformation, Kingdoms considers what we inherit, what we choose to preserve, and how authority is reimagined in the present. It invites viewers to reflect on the enduring legacies of leadership, belonging, and cultural continuity, revealing that the most enduring kingdoms are often those carried within people rather than defined by borders.

Before Tomorrow

October 8th - December 21st, 2027

Before Tomorrow is one of the most conceptually rich themes Ajanaku Gallery has developed. Unlike LEGACY, which asks what we pass on, or The Return of Greatness, which focuses on reclamation, Before Tomorrow examines the present as the point where memory becomes the future. It asks how yesterday shapes what comes next.

Before Tomorrow explores memory, inheritance, and the enduring consequences of yesterday. Bringing together artists whose work reflects on personal and collective histories, the exhibition examines what survives across generations—stories, traditions, beliefs, landscapes, and lived experiences—and how these shape the future. Positioned between remembrance and possibility, Before Tomorrow invites viewers to consider that the future is not created in isolation, but is continually formed by what we choose to preserve, what we allow to fade, and the legacies we leave behind.

Ajanaku Gallery is a contemporary exhibition space dedicated to the study of inheritance as both material and metaphysical condition. Its program investigates how memory is formed, how authority is constructed, how culture is transmitted, and how time reshapes what is preserved, lost, or reimagined. Across its exhibitions, the gallery considers one central question:

What survives us—and what do we become responsible for carrying forward?

Rather than treating history as a closed archive, Ajanaku Gallery understands it as an active field: unstable, contested, and continuously rewritten through image, object, language, and ritual form. The works presented across the program operate as evidence, fragments, and propositions—each one a site where personal memory intersects with collective inheritance. The curatorial cycle unfolds as a continuum rather than a sequence.

A Note From the Founder

Angela Babel established Ajanaku Gallery with a vision to create a dedicated platform for African and Afro-Caribbean artistic voices. She leads the gallery’s strategic direction, curatorial programming, and international partnerships. “LINEAGE presents African art as a living ecosystem where history, spirituality, architecture, mythology, and modern identity coexist.”
